George Okarvits, Utanian President
George Okarvits
b.249ap (53yrs)
President of the United Democratic Republic of Utania

George Okarvits is the son of Abraham Okarvits, the founder of the Utanian Peoples Party, the lead-government party in the federal Government, of which President Okarvits is leader.

Utanian President, 301ap-
Governor, Utani B'yan state (formerly Horn of Olives province), 293-299ap.
Opposition leader, Utani B'yan state, 286-293ap.
Trained as a schoolteacher, former-merchant seaman.
Thomas Kemp, federal opposition leader
Thomas Kemp
b.228ap (74yrs)
Federal Opposition Leader; Leader, federal Conservative Party.

Kemp is one of the old guard from the 270s Durning Conservative-Liberationist Movement (CLM) provincial government. Kemp, a greengrocer-turned-economist served as Durning's deputy Economic Policy adviser, then Minister for Ports, and later Economic Development.
He was disgusted with Asher's betrayal of Durning, and refused a ministry position in Asher's government, instead plotting to remove the "traitor", which he achieved six years later, becoming CLM leader for nine years, some of them as a Minister in Democratic governments. The Asher-experience turned most people off the CLM for a decade after Asher was thrown from office, but, to his credit, Kemp repaired much of that damage, returning the party to, at least, and equally-leading position.

After Asher died in 295, the aging Kemp reluctantly surrendered the reins of the party to Asher-acolyte Edward Hope. Hope won the '98 election, Kemp serving as Economic Development minister again.

Kemp's long service to the party, and brief stint as Utania's first, albeit provisional, Prime Minister, is fueling his political capital. He is now regarded as the Party's front-runner for the Presidential nomination.
Edward (Roahn) Hope Governor, Lasanne state (formerly Guwimith Wide Shore), 298ap-

Governor Hope briefly served as Utania's interim and provisional President, 300ap (January to September) before being replaced by the Parliament in favour of President Okarvits.

An arch-Asherist, Governor Hope is a third-place candidate for Conservative-CDP presidential nominee.
Edward Cryer Governor, Nystonia state (formerly Duck Egg Shore province), 297ap-

Governor Cryer is the Cruisian Democratic Party leader, a party that espouses strong "moral" government, and, as such, the death penalty is enacted, sentencing is harsh, homosexuals are arrested in Nystonia state.

Candidate for the Conservative-CDP Presidential nominee.
Hubert Artos Governor, Utani-B'yan state (formerly Horn of Olives province), 300ap-

Replacing Governor George Okarvits when he entered federal politics upon the nation's independence, Hubert Artos is the Utani-Saedaj Party (USP) leader in that state, and has been suffering scandals and poor polling more recently.
Governor Artos is facing an election before the end of the year (302ap), with his Peoples-USP coalition is not expected to survive.
Max Boornal
b.252ap (50yrs)
Politician; leader Utanian Burovian Movement; Presidential hopeful.

A Luka banker, who reached the upper echelons of banking, becoming a Vice President of Banking in the mid-nineties, when the corrupt Karizcek regime came to power. Governor Karizcek, National (pro-Guwimith) party, who lead the tossing out of the elected Peoples Party government by Parliamentary coup. Boornal stood firm against the corrupt government, and earned himself a price on his head. Boornal managed to get the Guwimithian Tsar involved, Karizcek sacked and democracy restored.
Enormously popular for his principled stand, Boornal was wooed by the Hope-lead Conservatives, and after he joined, Hope was elected Governor by an overwhelming majority.
Boornal later left Hope's provisional federal administration, accusing Hope of popularism, and signed-on to lead the Burovian Party.
Motu clan "Motu" is the name of the Utani family and their more distant relations, that are heirs to the Motu or Kanharan throne. The current Kanharan King is Chief Aron Motu, a political regressive, almost a "Yannist", opposed to development or exploitation of the Utani people. While his sons feel differently, Motu is only near fifty years old, and has at least another twenty years on the throne.
Saltury Family One of the legendary, influential and powerful families of Utania, particularly of the wealthier Lasanne state, the Salturys are billionaires who have heavy interest and influence in right-wing state, and now federal, politics.

Ian Saltury, deputy leader of the federal Democratic Party.

Louis Saltury, provisional-President Hope's Director of Health, Social Services and Education, Louis is a leading light in the federal Conservative Party.
Charles Durning Governor, Guwimith Wide Shore province (now Lasanne state), 273-282ap.

To call oneself a Durningist or Asherist is to define the Conservative Party faction to which one belongs. Asherists are more reform- minded, more radical "liberals". Durningists are also reformers, but perhaps less dogmatic. They also include the traditional "conservatives".

Charles Durning is a legend of Lasanne politics, the man, his many admirers' claim, who single-handedly developed the province's economy, making it the sole centre of trade, finance, industrial investment and jobs. Luka was little more than a one million people city of trade before Durning. After Durning, the city was one of the fastest growing in all the world, certainly the light of the Guwimithian Empire.

Durning was an arch Conservative, a liberaliser of trade, red tape, and investment. He slashed the military-inspired bureaucracy that was keeping the province in the 30s and 40s, and inspired thousands of new companies to form with money poured into the province as investment. Millions of jobs were created, and Utani and non-Utani alike poured into the province to get those jobs.

But, when a tough recession hit, soft-hearted Durning opened the treasury to the unemployed, running up provincial government debt, and prompting a coup by his deputy, the "fiscal fascist" Charles Asher. The coup split the Conservative-Liberationist "party" that ruled, and the Democratic Party replaced Asher three years later.

Durning created a new age, and cemented the supremacy of Luka in the Dependencies. He continues to represent the "moderate" faction within his Conservative Party, yet, his political-renaissance was to come after his death in 289, and he, personally, never really recovered from the betrayal by his party.
Charles Asher Governor, Guwimith Wide Shore province (now Lasanne state), 282-285ap; Province Finance Minister during Durning regime, 273-282ap.

Charles Asher represents the harder-line faction of the Conservative Party, after he betrayed his leader, Governor Durning, and lead a coup against him for the Governor's perceived betrayal of Conservative principles: he spent into the red during a severe economic downturn.

To call oneself a Durningist or Asherist is to define the Conservative Party faction to which one belongs. Asherists are more reform- minded, more radical "liberals". Durningists are also reformers, but perhaps less dogmatic. They also include the traditional "conservatives".

Asher was a strong accountant with a good financial and economic background, and believed government should be small, unobstructionist and removed from the picture of business. He can take a large slice of credit for implementing Governor Durning's vision for Guwimith Wide Shore province, but was less of an ideas man himself.

After betraying Durning, and becoming Governor himself, Asher proceeded to slash government spending to balance the books and repay debt. Hundreds of thousands suffered lengthy unemployment, and though Asher rebalanced the books within three years, and paying off millions of rubles in debt, he was unreservedly dumped by the electorate in favour of the more moderate Democrats.

Asher died ten years later and received a state funeral.
