Public Telephones
The availability of public telephones increases the further one is from Luka, oddly enough, as telephones are often not owned by all households in Utani B'yan and Savana, but a couple may be owned by a community. In Lasanne, UTC public phones are most commonly found on street corners in the centre of town, but in the suburbs can be very rare indeed! This largely also applies to Nystonia, and in the west of the state, the communal telephone is a dying idea as Utani communities are increasingly having phones connected in their homes.
It should be noted that some of these telephones do not offer dialing, but connect you with an operator to whom you give the domestic or international number. This is only the case in Savana or Utani B'yan. In all states coin-operated phones is commonplace, but UTC is increasingly implementing in Lasanne credit card and phone card operated telephones. The standard local call cost is 40c in Nystonia, Savana and Utani B'yan, and 50c in Lasanne. Domestic Dialing First of all, remember that Utania has the international dialing code +151. So, when dialing into Utania from elsewhere, you will need to use this. Utania is otherwise divided into one hundred zones or telephone code areas, and they are dialed regardless where you are calling from, even if within the same area. The telephone number is therefore nine digits long: two for the area, three, then four. Unlike most other countries, there is no zero required at the start (unless it is telephone services "area" code). Lasanne was allocated the 2* and 3* codes, Nystonia has the 4*, while Savana has 5*, and Utani B'yan has 6* and 7*. 1* is allocated exclusively to Utan Krysaror and all military or government installations, 0* is for "national numbers", while 8* and 9* remain unallocated to date. For example, to dial the University of Luka, which is close to the central business district and therefore in telephone zone 20, will be "20 431 2345" (43* **** being UoL phone numbers). Obviously, to dial that same number from overseas, add the +151 at the beginning. To dial Utan Krysaror's F.R.Whitlam embassy is 10 890 9144. 0* numbers include the 08 *** **** toll free numbers, and the 09 *** **** charge-per-minute numbers. 00*** numbers are for international dialing, and 01 exclusively for telecommunication services from the telecom companies. |
National phone calls vary depending on the distance from the
destination and the phone company being used. Overall UTC is the least expensive, and
Arasete-Nij Utani the most expensive. Calls from Utan Krysaror to Luka will cost about 70c a
minute, while Luka to Utan Krysaror will only cost 55c a minute.
For directory assistance, domestic or international, dial 018. It costs 50c nationwide. The operators can put you through to the number required, as well.
International dialing rates, are actually rather standard regardless of location, as they all go through UTC as the sole international carrier. They do drop in cost for off-peak times (6pm to 8am) by up to 50%. Dialing Guwimith peak-time costs Û1 per minute; Whitlam is U3 per minute, and most other nations a maximum of Û5.50 per minute. Some countries, however, such as Dignania, cost substantially more due to the country's internal phone company costs. To find out the cost of a call, call 0800 30123, a computerised service into which you type in the international code for the country, and the service will tell you the rates for the different times of day. To make a reverse charges call from a direct dialing phone, dial 018, which will cost 50c. | |
