WELCOME TO THE OFFICIAL GOVERMENT WEBSITE OF:

THE UNITED DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF

UTANIA

-- The UDR of Utania Armed Forces --

The Armed forces of Utania are a proud and noble force for the protection of the Utanian people and the Utanian national border, airspace, and protection of Utanians worldwide. While diplomatic channels will always be used to resolve a situation, the URDUAF is always ready to serve and protect the people of this proud land.

Utania's Armed Forces are under the executive command of the President of the nation. The President delegates strategic command to the Military Chief of Staff, currently Cmdr. General Arthur B. Arjaat, Utanian Army. General Arjaat heads a Joint Chiefs committee who report directly to the President. The Joint Chiefs is made up of each of the Commanders of the Military branches, plus their primary advisors:
General T. Henry Morgan, Commander of the Army;
Admiral Phillip Toffler, Commander of the Navy;
Admiral Devan E. Jasper, Commander of the Coast Guard; and
Air Marshal Miguel A. C'jarkan, Commander of the Air Force.

President Okarvits on April 1st, 301ap, introduced the Utanian Peacekeeping Force as a special division of the Army, and though subservient to the Chief of the Army, its commander has special reporting responsibilities to the President, and is a minor member of the Joint Chiefs committee. Consequently, the UPF is listed below as a separate category of the military. The current operational commander of the UPF is Lt. General William Gordain.

Major General Frank Marsden, special Army strategist advisor;
Lt. General John A. Kopana, commander of the Army Guards (POW guards and border patrols);
Major General S. Peter Kovacs, commander of the specialist Tokape brigade; and
Commodore Thomas M. Koehavn, special marine strategist (Navy, marine landings)
are also members of the Joint Chiefs committee as special advisors.

The UDRUAF is no longer under the command or control of the UNVCOCN in any way.

Conscription had been enforced in the Armed Forces of Utania, with all male citizens having to serve two years between the ages of 18 and 30 in the National Service. This policy, introduced March 300ap, has been abolished by the President July 301ap.

The United Democratic Republic of Utania regards nuclear weaponry a mute and now-useless tactical weapon, given the development of the Electra Mundi devices held by the Burovian Realm and Christiana. No development of nuclear weapons is therefore to be undertaken so long as these counter-measures remain entirely effective on Vexillium.

There is five branches of the military, and each can be examined through the following links:

-- UDRU Militias --

The near-independent state of Savana in the country's interior has, for many years, maintained its own Kingdom militia. These number some 5,600 men with outdated weaponry bolt-action rifles and ammunition dating back some forty to fifty years.

It was suspected, some time ago that the Kingdom Militia was involved in the rebel activities that lead to the attack on the Zartlam Oil exploration platforms in the Guwimith Strait. This is now demonstrably untrue, and the UDRUAF welcomes the existance of the militias in helping to provide additional organisation, information and patrols to the UDRUAF.

The exact groups responsible for the Zartlam attacks are a matter for the Utanian Protection and Intelligence Agency, UPIA.

-- Origins of the UDRUAF --

The Utanian Armed Forces were put together by the UNVCOCN "Point South" mission, who had taken from the remnants of the old Guwimithian Dependencies Armed Forces. Men in the GDAF of Utani ethnicity or Utanian residence were brought together into the same regiments, and sent to UNV "Point South" Protection Forces. In addition, men in the Guwimithian Armed Forces were also divided by ethnicity or residence into the new UNVCOCN areas they would serve.

Pulling together this collection of men was primarily the responsibility of General Arjaat, and UNV General Derrick Gruber of the UNVCOCN. General Arjaat's main support was a Colonel William Gordain, who now serves as commander of the Utanian Peacekeepers in Dignania.

The main aim of the Armed Forces is deterrent, and the training, military hardware and determination of the Army provides a significant deterrent.

The Navy was made up of a miscellaneous assortment of smaller battleships, cruisers, frigates, submarines and destroyers, plus support ships. Most of these warships built in Utania at one of the two major docklands, Vela Luka or Utan Krysaror, though some ships are ex-Giwimith Navy, and others purchased from foreign Navies. The aim of the Utanian Navy is to provide sufficient firepower to deter aggressor forces from attempting to invade Utanian waters, and to offer sufficient protection to Utanian vessels under threat in International waters. Certainly, Utania is fortunate to have such a strong fighting force.

Utanian warships are generaly named as fearsome names, however, more recent purchases have been named differently. Cruisers are now named after Utanian cities, while destroyers and Frigates are named after famous Utanian people. Hospital ships are named as "peaceful" names or phrases, submarines as marine creatures, and auxillery ships after land creatures, or features, such as rivers, mountains and regions. Efforts to have names of Utani tribes have been met with Utani disdain.
