Hamilton, Dodson, cliffhangers!!

Saturday, November 17, 301 AP
Web posted at 2255 UST.

Both the electorates of Hamilton and Dodson hang by a handful of votes each, the final results not likely for weeks.

Demographic changes in the electorate of Hamilton, with a higher industrial population in the city, contracting the electorate's borders away from the rural dairy farmers around the city, has yielded the first ever possible loss of Hamilton to another party.

The Conservatives are currently 28 votes behind the Peoples Party with postal and absentee votes likely to decide the winner of the electorate.

Seats looking marginal

A result for the electorate will not be likely for some weeks given the very close result, and this could put the government under some pressure.

"Hamilton's population has grown substantially over the past ten years, with an increasingly industrial and urbanised population. Once the electorate had a town of 45,000 and a large rural area consisting of conservative-voting dairy farmers", notes Professor David Kapur on Zeitgeist News, which is broadcasting the results of the election live from Channel Two tonight.

"Slowly, with increasing urbanisation, the Conservative Party has been increasingly squeezed. Now, for the first time, another party may win this seat, which must come as an awful shock to the Conservative Party in that electorate."

Similarly, the electorate of Dodson, based on the semi-urban and rural communities around farms west of Luka, is becoming more heavily populated with Utani workers in the tobacco and cotton processing plants sprouting in the region. This has significantly endangered the Democratic Party's hold on that electorate.

The final electorate to be most recently declared was Shiremount, in the south. There was less than 700 votes between the Liberal Nationalists and the Peoples Party in the end, but the Liberal Nationalists conceded that they were unlikely to make that ground up with a few thousand postal votes.

The final vote is therefore a close but assured victory to the Government, with one seat to spare before these two marginal seats are declared.
