Governor declares victory!!

Saturday, November 17, 301 AP
Web posted at 2314 UST.

While his Parliamentary coalition government may not be holding onto victory by a very clear majority, Governor Hope said it was "a clear endorsement of the policies that have brought stability", as he declared victory for his coalition and himself.

Governor Hope is easily returned The Governor very easily defeated his rival, Rupert McKay, 56-42, in the race for the Governor's chair, while animal rights and environmentalist independent, Allan Lystrom, won a mere 1.3% of the statewide vote on a green platform.

Mr McKay conceded defeat shortly before eleven o'clock in the evening (Utanian Standard Time), saying that they had fought a "good, solid campaign", and that they had "severely frightened the Governor to reconsider the policies of government inaction".

Governor Hope then emerged to claim victory in this tightly fought election, his re-election assured, but his government in the House of Representatives had been looking very unstable.

But, with the final seats falling into place, the Governor's broad Conservative-lead coalition of four parties -- the Conservative, Democrats, Liberal Nationalists and Cruistian-Democrats -- has squeaked through with 48 seats in the new 93-seat House, a single vote clear of a majority.

"We have come far, friends, but we have made clear progress for the state, and the people have recognised this."

"We fought this election on the basis of our progress in jobs, state finances and rooting out the corruption left behind by the Tsarist regime. We have achieved much, and the people of Lasanne have chosen to put their faith in our continued leadership and good governance."

Mr McKay received little praise from the Governor, setting the stage for a long hard fight over the next four years by Mr McKay to win power.

Blame the Burovians.

The Governor's coalition has lost six seats, though it might gain two with the marginal electorates yet to be finalised, which is a very near defeat. And while the Conservative Party leaders might wring their hands in anguish, theirs is not the fault.

It can be laid squarely at the feet of the Burovians and their strong showing in formerly Conservative seats, particularly in the north of the state.

Though they only claimed seven seats of their own, the Liberal-Burovian's so-called third force split the conservative vote, claiming 16% of the state vote. The combined government parties only managed to win 43%, a significant drop from the 297 election when they won 55% of the vote, a clear indication of the strength of the Liberal-Burovian wins and of their ability to disrupt the election. The opposition won 39% of the popular statewide vote, while other, non-aligned parties won 2%.

Lasanne state Liberal-Burovian coalition leader, Albert Dyson, said their wins were "a resounding declaration that the people of this state desire better leadership, more open and honest government, and a change to the centre: fiscal responsibility, but social progressiveness.

"And now we are willing to work with either Mr McKay or Mr Hope to ensure sound, sensible and strong government... but on the terms we dictate: fairness, complete propriety, and an end to the political deal-making that brings this state into disrepute!"

Mr Dyson told the assembled supporters in the party headquarters in the city of Burman, north of Luka, in the Burovian-won electorate of Bryson, that they owed a great deal to the "hard campaigning of federal leaders Max Boornal and Naahi Bennett", both of whom had been heavily campaigning the past four weeks.

Two seats left.

There remains two electorates unresolved:

The almost-final result for the state election
Counting will continue in these electorates, but neither will determine the final result of the election: tonight, Governor Hope is re-elected, and his government is all-but guaranteed victory.
